Project Limits: State Road (S.R.) 717/East Canal Street from S.R. 80 to SE Avenue E and S.R. 15/S.R. 80 from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to West Avenue A.
Project Purpose: To repave and restripe the existing roadway to extend the service life of the pavement and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Public Workshop: Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. located at the Belle Glade Branch Library, 725 NW 4th Street, Belle Glade, Florida 33430. Free parking will be provided during the public meeting at the library. The meeting will be offered in-person and virtually simultaneously. Anticipated Construction Start: Spring 2027

Estimated Construction Cost: $4.0 Million
Scope of Work:
- Repave the existing roadway to extend service life.
- Upgrade curb ramps, detectable warnings, sidewalks, crosswalks, handrails, pedestrian signals and detectors to comply with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) to provide safer routes for pedestrians.
- Install traffic signal backplates to improve visibility for motorists.
- Replace damaged traffic signals and illuminated street name signs.
- Upgrade signs and pavement markings to meet current standards and increase reflectivity.
- Replace impacted vehicle detection systems and traffic signal controller cabinets.
- Regrade and add drainage structures to eliminate ponding along S.R. 717/East Canal Street and S.R. 15/S.R. 80/South Main Street.
- Construct barrier wall at the Northwest corner of S.R. 717/East Canal Street at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to eliminate the gap between the bridge handrail and the guardrail to shield pedestrians and motorists from the canal.
- Provide guardrail extensions on S.R. 717/East Canal Street to improve roadside safety.
- Reconstruct driveways along S.R. 717/East Canal Street to enhance access for residents and prevent premature pavement deterioration and drop-off issues.
- Widen the paved shoulder on Westbound S.R. 717/East Canal Street on the approach to the S.R. 15/S.R. 80/South Main Street intersection to improve access to adjacent property.
Construction Impacts:
- Work will be done in phases to reduce the impacts to the community.
- Temporary lane closures will be used during construction.
- The repaving of the roadway will be performed during night-time hours.
- Access to properties will be maintained throughout construction.
- Temporary pedestrian paths and detours will be provided for work impacting existing crosswalks, sidewalks and pedestrian curb ramps.
